Miyazaki's shochu is characterised by a variety of shochu with different flavours made from the main ingredients such as potato, rice, barley and buckwheat. Please try the unique shochu made by each producer.

There are several points to its characteristics.

  • Ingredients: Most shochu in Miyazaki is made from sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes grow easily in Miyazaki's mild climate and give the shochu a rich flavor. Rice shochu is also available, but sweet potatoes are especially famous.
  • Process: Miyazaki shochu preserves traditional methods while incorporating modern techniques. In particular, many shochus are aged for a long time to produce a mellow, deep flavor.
  • Flavor : Miyazaki shochu is known for its fruity and aromatic qualities. The natural sweetness and flavor of the sweet potatoes are prominent, resulting in a drink that is both easy to enjoy and rich in taste.
  • Typical brands: Miyazaki is home to some of the most famous shochu in the country, such as "Akagirishima" and "Kurokirishima". These are widely loved for their quality and unique flavor.
  • Regional characteristics: Each region of Miyazaki has its own unique style and characteristics of shochu. For example, shochu from the Miyakonojo area is clean and relatively light.
